When Seasons Change, You Don't
Ascendant is Outdoor Research's newest form of Active Insulation, launched in the US last winter and now available in the UK. It's mid-weight insulation that's versatile enough to wear all year round - so it's unlikely to linger in your gear closet for any length of time.
We spend our lives transitioning through work, rest and play - and our time in the mountains can feel the same. As we adjust between different states of activity, our temperature fluctuates up and down, so we wear layers that help us to adjust our temperature to suit. But not all layers are created equal, and we don't always choose the right weight.
If you're pushing through the crux of your final pitch and the weather spells impending doom - you're unlikely to stop and remove your jacket. And when it's a total downpour, but your layers are building up heat and moisture - it's also not ideal to remove anything. At times like these layers aren't always convenient, so the trick is to choose ones with a broad comfort temperature range for extended wear time. This is what we call Active insulation - and it's an area in which Outdoor Research excels.
The Ascendant Collection is Outdoor Research's most complete range of Active Insulation yet, and brings you a range of lightweight clothing and accessories that maintain comfort by being warm yet breathable. Ascendant combines stretchy Pertex® Microlight fabric with Polartec® Alpha Direct insulation for best-in-class warmth, breathability, wicking-action and dry times. It's also weather resistant and instantly warm.

With its excellent active cut and well-considered set of features, the Prism is a superb light synthetic insulated jacket at a price it's hard to argue with. Dan Bailey admits to being a big fan.
Maybe it's the good cut, maybe it's the breathability, or maybe it's the balance between insulation and airflow - but there's just something about the Icarus Flight that works, says Rob Greenwood
While The North Face describe the Ventrix Hoodie as a midlayer, you could equally call it a thin jacket. It's hard to pigeonhole. But more importantly, did we like it..?
