Macpac know how to make packs - they've been doing it for decades. The current range of Macpac rucksacks bear the same design principles that Macpac are famous for - durability, usability and simplicity. Here are a few highlights from the 2017 range.
Alpine Ascent 65
There aren't many packs on the market like the Ascent 65. Designed for big alpine adventures, the ascent is a simple, lightweight and incredibly durable pack. Perfect for multi day alpine climbing and expeditions when performance is paramount.
The Ascent 65 is made using a combination of two very hard wearing fabrics. Macpac's legendary 8oz EcoAztec fabric is used on the lid and sides for weather resistance and toughness. EcoAztec is a strong, heavyweight fabric that uses certified organic cotton and polyester yarns woven together and impregnated with waterproofing waxes and resins. On the front of the pack Macpac have used a 500d cordura nylon which will stand up to years of abuse from sharp tools and abrasive granite.
Features wise the Ascent 65 is pretty simple; it has a removable floating lid with cavernous top pocket, side compression straps, front daisy chains and a clean, comfortable thermo formed back panel (with removable bivy pad) and hipbelt. Weight 2.1kg.
Pursuit + Pursuit NZAT
The Pursuit is a lightweight, strong and simple pack that is designed for all round climbing use from Scottish winter to a day at the crag. The pack has a simple back panel with webbing hipbelt, front bungee attachment with dual axe loops and a top rope strap. The top zip entry is easy to use and makes accessing gear super easy even mid route. Aztec canvas fabric is strong and very weather resistant. Weight 700g.
The Pursuit NZAT has been developed in conjunction with the New Zealand Alpine Team and is even lighter than the standard Pursuit courtesy of the Nylon Dyneema fabric. Weight is a very impressive 600g.
Essentially a smaller version of the Pursuit, the Fanatic 23 makes a great lightweight climbing sack as well as being perfect for hillwalking and scrambling too. Aztec fabric ensures the Fanatic 23 is durable and weatherproof and the simple non absorbent back panel carries weight well. The top zip entry makes accessing gear a simple task and the combination of side compression straps and front bungee strips carry tools with ease. Weight 620g
Fast and Light
Amp 12HR, 25 & 40
The Amp series of packs are aimed at fast and light users including runners, lightweight backpackers and mountain bikers.
The 12HR is an awesome endurance running or biking pack with a super comfortable vented foam back and a clever adjustable hipbelt that allows the user to shorten or lengthen the back. The single compartment design is simple and easy to use and the zipped hipbelt pockets and large front stretch mesh pocket keeps essentials to hand. The Amp 12HR also comes equipped with a squeeze bottle on the shoulder strap. Weight 480g.
The Amp 25 is a fully featured lightweight pack for adventure racing and mountain marathons. It shares the same foam back panel as the Amp 12HR but has a traditional top loading design, more storage options and side compression straps. Weight 690g.
The Amp 40 is similar in design to the 25 but has an increased level of support in the back system along with a large front stretch mesh pocket. The Amp 40 is also available in 3 different back sizes and is a great modern lightweight backpacking sack. Weight 880g.
Weka 24, 30 & 40
The Wekas are classic, durable day packs for hiking and general outdoor use. All sizes are made using super tough EcoAztec canvas fabric for durable, water resistant performance. All three sizes have a simple top loading design with large single compartment, top lid pocket and trekking pole attachment. The Weka 40 has an additional front pocket too.
Made to last, and with more than a nod towards sustainability, the Archeon is an easy pack to like. The high weight is a forgivable consequence of its durable and supportive feel, says Dan Bailey, but a more minimalist design might have better suited its old school...
Deuter Guide 44+ Pack
Part of a major revamp to Deuter's Guide range, the new Guide 44+ is proving an excellent all-round mountain pack, equally at home on hill walks, scrambles and winter climbs, says Dan Bailey. It's not a lightweight minimalist, though...
Montane Fast Alpine 40 Pack
"The Fast Alpine 40 is Montane's very decent stab at making an all-round pack for the British mountaineer", reckons Toby Archer
Whether you're scaling glaciers or projecting a summer rock route, the Halcyon 35:40 alpine mountaineering pack has everything you need for a day moving in the mountains.
