At UKC we are all climbers and we understand the strong urge to be outdoors as the weather is finally improving.

Please proceed with caution though. More details.

UKClimbing Team

800m. Almost certainly the finest winter climb in the UK available to weekend warriors, and certainly the longest. Tower ridge continues to fascinate and compel, with a magnificent mix of wall, ridge, and traverse lines taking the boldest classic alpine route almost to the very summit of Britain's highest mountain. The two crux pitches, the eastern traverse and the Tower Gap are formidable obstacles in any conditions, and many a party has been benighted attempting to solve their mysteries. On a ridge like this, route finding should be obvious, but in poor weather it can be a nightmare. Worth remembering is the Tower Ridge Rulebook (Cold Climbs) quote "Go up to the Great Tower until it gets really steep before traversing left" - not knowing this has led to many epics, several mentioned below.

J.N.Collie, G.A.Solly, J.Collier 30/Mar/1894

Ticklists

Cold Climbs, Ben Nevis Ridges, Mountaineering in Scotland: in the footsteps of WH Murray, 3 star Scottish winter, MUMC Ticklist, The best the UK has to offer for mere mortals (apart from the lakes cos its always wet), Chasing the Ephemeral, Winter Aspirations, Big Routes, The Great Gumclub Ticklist, Magical mysterious and unusual beasts of rock & myth, Cold Climbs (slimmed down), EUMC - Must do climbs, Scottish Winter Climbs

βeta: Walking from the quarry carpark after a relaxed and late start we arrived at the Douglas gap to find few people about and nobody on the ridge. A glorious scramble with exposure and good holds the whole way I loved every minute, with huge wall all around really added to the flavour of the route. Sun finally came out when we reached the top, want to do it again.

βeta: (Summer)Lovely sustained grade 2/3 scramble, if you can handle exposure it’s a breeze. There’s always a good hold In reach even though rocks were wet you get good grip! Walk in 75mins climb 50mins, descended as the crow flys back to north face car park. Not recommended. Very loose and tiresome. Better to abseil if you have rope but 2nd best, follow the walking path down the south side and branch off right back into the Nevis valley

Fossil 23 Feb AltLd O/S We were up at 5 and after a lot of tent faff we made it up to Douglas Gap via the West Gully by 7. Jonty led the first pitch, then later decided to launch a glove down the mountain before I led a short ice pitch with a couple of piece-of-mind-screws for protection. Approaching the Little Tower the snow deteriorated from decent neve to powder with a shitty rain crust... not ideal. Thankfully there was some decent neve for axes on the eastern traverse. I had the scariest runout of my life coming out of Tower Gap. Mostly worrying for Jonty 50m below my spike-cum-snow-bollard anchor with no runners. We went to the summit shelter after after topping out and by the time we emerged the weather was starting to clear. A glorious end to a fantastic adventure!

Deep snow and poor vis hampered the approach and the start. Gained the Douglas Gap from the western gully which was fun snow wading. Saved some time. Route finding tricky to start with but bumped into an old hand and followed their trail which really helped. Blue sky appeared for the final impressive third and the summit. 5hrs from Douglas gap to the top. 10hr day.

Made the classic mistake of leaving the ridge too early thinking we had done the little tower. The great tower really is an unmissable wall so keep going until you hit that! Eastern traverse very sketchy with so much snow and the gear was completely buried. Had to crawl under the boulder and finished climbing out of tower gap without headtorches as darkness fell. Walked down via the zigzags to avoid avalanche danger and received a warm welcome at the hut from fellow climbers. Including two German ice climbers who thought we were mad for setting out in the first place. Looking forward to doing this again in more favourable conditions.

alexm198 31 Mar, 2018 AltLd O/S Fourth ridge of the day. Dropped down Tower Gully and enjoyed a truly excellent bumslide down to the East gully of the Douglas boulder. I think we started the route just before 4pm. Gave the brew a miss on this one, and kept the rope in the bag. Drank the last of the water and then capitalised on the well-established track up the gully. Soloed to the bottom of the little tower, where we put on the rope and simul climbed the rest of the route. Dropped a tibloc just before Tower Gap, which was annoying. Topped out just after 6pm, with the clouds having lifted, treating us to a great view down to Fort William.

I think we went slightly too far up the left side of Douglas boulder, couldn't find the east gully into Douglas gap but climbed a gully that brought us out on top of Douglas gap. 2.5 hours from the top of Douglas gap to the summit. Snow was a bit crusty/powdery around Little Tower but above that turned into great ice and bomber neve. Alice lead up right at little tower which gave for some pretty spicy and exposed moves. Eastern traverse in fantastic condition, fat rime everywhere which was pretty but made finding gear hard. Pitched down into Tower Gap but moved together on everything else.

timday 24 Feb, 2018 AltLd Superb day out (well apart from the small matter of the wind on top). Left carpark ~5am, first on route at top of East Gully ~7:40, topped out ~11:40. Fantastic solid snow conditions. Soloed out of Douglas Gap and a fair way on, then a mix of moving together/pitching. Eastern Traverse well protected by in-situ nuts and then plenty of options in rocks round the corner so just kept moving there. Tower Gap awkwardness eased by snow and ice in useful places. Used a doubled 50m half-rope per BMC's page on the route, but thought it not quite long enough... would take something with 30m or 40m reach for a repeat. Lunch in summit shelter (popular!); descended by CMD arete (spectacular under blue skies). Scotland doesn't get better than this.

donalmurray 1 Jan, 2018 AltLd O/S 12 hours on route despite moving together the entire way. Heavy powder all the way, chest deep at times, never less than mid thigh. Went a bit off piste, mistaking the hump before great tower for great tower and traversed left over echo wall. Ended up on an exposed traverse with no hooks on powder with dry rock underneath. Also went off route after fallen block chimney and ended up on some steep interesting terrain in the dark with very little gear directly up to the top of the great tower, didn't really bypass it properly at all! Found some tech 6 along the way. Topped out and walked to the summit for about 10pm - first time up the Ben and one I'm not likely to forget! Back down to the car 18 hours after setting out. A real epic but really enjoyable.

Took a while to find the start, we initially began too far left and round, and had to backtrack from some truly awful windslab slopes. Mike kindly let me lead the whole route, the cruxes for me being the groove out of the Douglas gap (not that many hooks in the andesite), and a vertical corner of rotten ice (token thread protection) just before the great tower. The eastern traverse felt straightforward though wonderfully absorbing, and the real highlight for me was the knife edge leading up to Tower gap- magnificent! Beautiful weather and a stunning sunset on the way down from the summit to boot! My happiest day in the mountains so far. Nice one Mike!

About 8hrs from the bottom of East gully to the top. The snow wasn't as useful as it could have been (a bit too soft) so this meant we ended up pitching more than we otherwise would. Pete_Frost 14 Feb, 2016 AltLd O/S I really enjoyed this classic route and I think it is worth every one of its three stars. It felt harder than other grade IIIs that I've done, but that might have been due to a lack of neve on the day. The ice pitch on the little tower was a delight - pity I left our one screw with Liz on the belay, but the ice was so good that climbing without protection felt secure. We took about 7 hours bottom to top, with at least a half hour wait at the Douglas gap whilst two teams climbed the chimney ahead of us. We managed to overtake one team and we simul-climbed all but five pitches: the chimney above the Douglas gap, the little tower icefall, and three short pitches: * from the end of the Eastern Traverse to the Tower gap, *Tower gap itself, and *one pitch beyond that (Top tip, don't pull the rope tight when your second is traversing - Sorry Liz!). If you've only climbed grade III, 3 before then I suggest you do some long grade IIIs and a few short tech 4s in preparation so you've got something in reserve in case conditions aren't perfect when you climb. I'd also strongly suggest you learn how to move together safely and efficiently on easy ground before you tackle Tower Ridge, or you may not enjoy one of the best climbs in the UK, and one of the best alpine routes outside the Alps.

Dizz 14 Feb, 2016 AltLd O/S Rather a good first winter route of the season! Mainly simul climbed swinging leads, I was lucky enough to get the Eastern Traverse and Gap pitches - although possibly less scary on lead! Pete led Little Tower direct. Hard to find gear as rock is buried and iced, and not much good neve making the climbing harder, although enough. Serious but super fun. Got back down off the hill to the heather in daylight just, but still a long walk back down to car park! Think we were on it 7 hours - long enough! Walked in just after first light so prob 11 hours car to car with about an hour food and gear faff at CIC, and tricky navigation off the top down the shoulder - I didn't keep strictly enough to my bearing in the clag and got too far north, plus had to avoid nasty looking snow slopes. Memorable.

Eastern Traverse easy, but intimidating - walking on exposed snow ledge with very little belay. Nice technical move on top of Great Tower. Used in situ tat (A-zero) to down climb to Tower Gap. Climbing off tower gap was a technical crux. Left hand side detour looked uncertain under snow, we climbed straight up. I lead whole route but Eastern Traverse was equally serious for the second. We were alone on the route. 5.5 h since roping up at the crest of the ridge at 9 am. Left North Face car park at 5.45 am, back at 6.30 pm thanks to my poor navigation.

The gully out of Douglas Gap was tricky (no ice), so was the ascent of the Great Tower from the Eastern Traverse. Everything else was okay - just terribly cold.

It started with an arduous wade to the Douglas gap before a rude reminder. Got on top of the great tower as it got dark, and then after some steeling of myself, descended into tower gap. Afterwards we figured we should summit the Ben itself. Got back to the car on Saturday.

QuicNic 15 Jan, 2016 AltLd dnf Despite starting really early from just below CIC (6:20am, camping) and moving together on the easy stuff we ran out of time. An epic struggle up East Gully in deep powder did not help. A lot of powder on the ridge and little useable snow/ice as far as the little tower where we decided to turn round at 10:45am. We started first pitch at 8:30am........slow. I believe we met "onlyfoddington" and "Michael" on our way down, about an hour behind us, they continued up to the top.

JonLongshanks 9 Jan, 2016 AltLd O/S What an epic route. Think I've had my eye on this climb ever since I got into climbing... Beautiful starlit, cold night to start. Bottom of West Gully at first light and topped out just before dark. Pretty lean condition but got better towards the top. Nice weather for the first half of the ridge - then took a windy and claggy turn for the worse... Certainly a couple of my hardest winter leads, Mike did a grand job too with walking boots and not getting on with his axes! Glad Mike convinced me to give it a shot. First official IV. Will be back.

The route is excellent, some tricky short moves and a variety of challenges but never desperate. The biggest challenge was the queuing before each of the tricky bits. Started at 7.30am, got to plateau at 8pm. 3 hours spent waiting! Got in a tangle as we belayed on the top of the block in the gap and everyone climbed past - ropes were caught and I couldn't climb out the other side as was being dragged down. Think we should have started from CIC at 6am.

davidbird63 H 28 Feb, 2014 AltLd O/S An ambition for a whiole. On the day I think the only party on the route. More satisfying to have broken trail and found the route. The spindrift and wind and lack of consolodated snow made the Ridge the best option. Jumped Tower Gap because the climbdown was covered and looked horrible. Very hard to put protection in all up the route. We simply moved together and found almost no natural protection due to the covering of snow. A great and satisfying day.

mikehenesy 28 Jan, 2012 2nd O/S A few delays so we didn't get on the route until ten but it all went fine and were finished by 3. Bobby led it all and I did a stirling job seconding. Sociable event with other parties including Bill and Lloydy. Not ideal conditions but neve on the last bit but snow more solid than last time I did it and more of it. No pro on the traverse which made it exciting.

John Holden 26 Feb, 2011 2nd rpt Done as part of a mass Carlisle Club ascent, in the care of Steve McDonnel and Ray Cassidy. First pitch behind the Douglas boulder rather thin on ice, but thereafter good snow and ice for most of the route with the odd bit of mixed here and there. Eastern traverse...Wow! Tower gap, very hard, did ice ramp on the left rather than climbing direct out of the gap, which looked desparate. Thanks boys.

Byakkonick 11 Feb, 2011 AltLd Conditions good, but the cloud came in half way up the ridge so made route finding hard from then on. The pitch up onto the ridge from Douglas gap was interesting. Got lost on the second tower, went off left, not a good idea! Eastern traverse was sporting and the gap was hairy! (Slight cross winds and a 30m run out from the belay into the gap). Good day despite all that :)
