What we do in the shadows - the original film that the series is based on. And it’s on the iplayer!

In reply to The Lemming:

Let the Right One In. The original one.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.

I can never get tired of Interview with a Vampire.

I second the above suggestion of What we do in the shadows, it’s brilliant.

And of course the entire TV series of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

"The Addiction" and "Only Lovers Left Alive" are good if you like a bit of arthouse.

"Near Dark" is worth it for the Tangerine Dream soundtrack.

The Keep.  Quite difficult to find though.  The F Paul Wilson book on which it's based was good, back on the day.

+1 for Salem's Lot.

Fair comment! I tend to put vampires and zombies in the same bucket with a big "woo" sticker on it, so I only really take note when a film lampoons what I see as the collective genre with such comic genius.

I can't believe there are no Hammer Films on the UKC list. How about:

The Vampire Lovers

Countess Dracula

The House that dripped Blood

By remarkable coincidence all seem to feature Ingrid Pitt…

In reply to The Lemming:

Near Dark is pretty good - dusty, modern western story of a vampire clan, directed by a pre-Oscar fame Katherine Bigalow.  Lance Henrickson (Bishop from Alien) is the patriarch.

30 Days of Night - set in Alaska.  Vampires are only a danger at night... but what happens in the prolonged night of the Arctic? Maybe not a traditional vampire story - more an action film with monsters but good fun.

Nutty but does explain how  Confederate vampires were actually defeated in the Civil war. Based on one of a series of books concerning little known facts about historical figures eg Henry 8th Werewolf.

I know someone else mentioned that they weren't a fan of the Wesley Snipes Blade films but they did pretty much save Marvel from bankruptcy and there have been some decent comics published by then since so definitely worthwhile!

Byzantium
Rise
John Carpenter’s Vampires
Bloodrayne series
Hotel Transylvania franchise for a bit of light relief!

It started well, just don't bother with the third episode.  That was just a lazy re-hash of Jekyll.  (Also written by Steven Moffatt, also for the BBC - that was the one with James Nesbit as Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde, no vampires but lots of fun and well worth a watch.)

Whether it’s truly a vampire film is ambiguous, but that’s kind of the whole point. It’s a pretty depressing story but definitely worth a watch.

John Carpenters Vampires. It's cheesy but James Woods plays a great part.

I know.  I believe the author of the novel on which it's based described the film as visually stunning but an otherwise unwatchable blancmange, though not in those exact words.

So that'll be you and me watching it for the soundtrack then . . .

Ken Russell's The Lair of the White Worm

Stoker ( bit of a stretch admittedly https://them0vieblog.com/2013/12/27/my-12-for-13-stoker-a-vampire-story-wit... )

Nadja (Michael Almereyda film from 1994/5)

Thirst (Rod Hardy's Australian film from around 1978)

 Blue Straggler 03 Aug 2023
In reply to The Lemming:

not a recommendation as such, because overall it falls flat, but there are some very good central ideas in Dracula 2000 (starring Gerard Butler when he was still almost cool) that make it worth watching, and I think you'll enjoy some of the supporting cast. It's more interesting than several recommendations above (Daybreakers, Countess Dracula, The Lost Boys)

There's a lot of good stuff about that film! Peter MacNicol as Renfield denying he's eating insects. Amy Yasbeck as Mina and Lysette Anthony as Lucy both totally doing over the top English accents. Dracula's happy dream sequence where he eats chicken at a picnic in the sunshine and enjoys some red wine...

Japanese surreal comedy "Mr Vampire"

Introduces new vampire rules such as if you push chopsticks up your nose the vampire can't smell you, also the vampires don't walk but jump with feet together. Story is like the script has been modified by Vic and Bob with Spike Milligan.

In reply to wilkie14c:

Worth mentioning 'what we do in the shadows' is (I presume) meant to be a comedy.. but I don't get anything out of it as I was looking for a hard edged, gritty, scary thriller type vampire film. Imagine a version of the detectorists but about vampires (cringe).
