was there the other day and pondered what causes the pattern, i thought maybe where different plates of ice had joined? any ideas?

I realise I must have been standing right next to you when you came along, put your axes down and grabbed that shot as I have several with the same climber in that spot (including one on UKC) yet none with anything like the impact - makes me appreciate how good a shot it is.
