The Classic Hartsop Round Walking

Starting from the beautiful village of Hartsop in Patterdale, this is a superb Lakeland ridge walk taking in four Wainwrights. The views of Red Screes, Dove Crag, Fairfield and St Sunday Crag are among the best mountain views in the Lake District, while Windermere dominates the vista to the south.

Detailed description

NY4099713023 From the car park go through the gate and turn right down to the beck. Cross over, then head up the edge of the stone wall to a stile in the field corner. A path leads onto the north ridge of Hartsop Dodd. This is steep but it soon brings you out onto the summit.

NY4114411829 The drystone wall that runs just east of south along the ridge is a good guide to lead you to the next summit, Stony Cove Pike.

NY4180509984 From Stony Cove Pike follow the wall going eastwards down into the deep col known as Thresthwaite Mouth. The going is rocky here, but it's pretty straightforward. From Thresthwaite Mouth a steep ascent leads up to the east, via a broken gully, to the summit of Thornthwaite Crag with its magnificent summit cairn, the Thornthwaite Beacon.

NY4313910033 Follow the stone wall north-westwards for a couple of hundred metres, then move away from it, going more northwards onto the obvious ridge heading towards Gray Crag. You'll pass over a top at 710m, then just before a stone wall that cuts over the ridge, another summit at 699m. Just beyond this is the Wainwright summit, at 698m.

NY4268111833 The path continues down the north ridge from the Wainwright summit. At around 550m you'll find that you're approaching a crag. The path veers off to the right, towards Hayeswater. Follow this, and it soon comes back to the north-west, beneath the crag. Just below lies the main track to Hayeswater from Hartsop village. Drop down onto this and turn left, following the track downhill and easily back to Hartsop.
