A new series of the BBC Alba programme Dàna - Scotland's Wild Side has launched, showcasing the finest climbing and hillwalking on some of the country's most remote mountains and adventurous sea cliffs.
To find out more about their latest escapades in the Highlands and Islands and the challenges of filming in Scottish weather, we sent some questions to star of the show Coinneach Rankin and series director Hamish Macleod.
I particularly like the combination of fantastic locations, the low key, quiet presentation style and the choice of routes, which are relatable to a non-elite climber like myself.
The current series has definitely moved on from the 1st two in terms of production and delivery - really enjoying it. The best thing about the Stoer episode was that they didn't climb the tourist route - they went up Diamond Face route - https://www.ukclimbing.com/logbook/crags/old_man_of_stoer-300/diamond_face_...
Really enjoyed the couple of these which I've seen. Managed to make sub-extremes look outrageous and got me really interested in visiting those places (and made me want to re-visit the ones I'd already been to!).
Really enjoyed this interview having caught series 1 and very lately a couple from series 3. Best outdoor program on telly, bar none, and as a refugee from the 80’s it still inspires me to get out there.
Is that really likely? The standard situation with many BBC shows is free access on Iplayer for a time limited period after broadcast then available to pay to steam via Brit Box or purchase on DVD.
Unfortunately I really don't know, the desire for previous epsidodes to be made available on iPlayer has been passed on certainly. My observation is there's not much rhyme nor reason as to how long stuff stays on, or is replaced.
> Let's hope the BBC put series 1 and 2 of Dana on iplayer
Series 1 episode 1 is next showing at 22:00 on 7/12/23 and will be on iplayer “shortly after”. Presumably the other old episodes will be released one by one after that. It beats me why the BBC release it this way. It was similar for another Gaelic program which was about wild swimming. If you have the technical knowhow it isn’t too hard to download the mp4 files as they are released to keep on your computer and watch when you want.
