hey Phil (I think, there is often a little one in Les Contamines at Notre dam de la Gorge, just under the start of the Roman road where it is always a sheet of ice

In reply to philipjardine:

There is one at Pelvoux just after the tunnel to Ailefroide _ don't think there is a website there is a Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/p/Cascade-des-Claux-Pelvoux-Vallouise-100063553685...

There is also one just out side L'Argentière-la-Bessée on the way to Fournel valley.

Both are managed by local guides, the pelvoux one used to be free and just turn up. But now I think you should book and pay at both. They both get used for the ice climbing festival in Jan.

I saw a sign in the Val del'Orco this summer for an ice farm. Don't know how active it is, if they farm ice every winter etc. though. But the sign was newish looking.

Location here:

There's a little picture of it here:

https://www.valdherens.ch/en/ice-climbing-in-arolla-fp49471

It's just one boulder they've put a hose on. But there's plenty of natural beginner-friendly ice in the same valley.

We spend every New Year here and keep meaning to go (but the snow is always so good we just ski and have lunch in refuges 😊).

Bit of a long shot but you don’t know if there’s anywhere local you can hire technical axes?  We’ll have our petzl sum tecs, but something more technical would be nice.

All the best

Not sure if you consider Guillestre as local but

Never hired anything from them &no idea what sort of axes they rent. An alternative might be one of the local guides as they must have axes for their clients

That’s very helpful thank you. We do know a lovely guide there so I might try him.

Saas-Fee has one in the underground carpark - real ice, but man-made.

Eispark Osttirol has an outdoor one, currently closed but you can look at the historical webcam images here:-  https://www.foto-webcam.eu/webcam/eispark-osttirol/2023/04/24/1000

I didn't know about the saas fee one.  A friends daughter went ski de fond training last summer in a multi storey that they fill up with snow!

I had a toprope on it at Xmas in 2001 on a ski trip.  Lots of chandeliers & mushrooms, it was all bullet-hard water ice - you could see a good 8" into the mushrooms. Never been so pumped in my life!
