Hi all!
I’m looking for a women’s softshell jacket I can climb in that has a tough canvassy outer shell so it won’t get snagged on the rock when I’m climbing. It has to be completely wind resistant as well and with a nice generous hood. Is it possible to find something for under £200 do you think?
I’d be so grateful for any recommendations.

Cheers!

The Mountain Equipment Squall is great, my partner and I both use them. You can pick up the women's for £72 at the moment, which is a bargain.

It's a minimal shell, no insulation, so you'd layer it over a fleece or something in colder weather. Hood is excellent and fits over a helmet.

Soft shell is kind of a broad concept. When you say climbing, what kind of scenario? Are you thinking rock/multi-pitch/mountain rock? Or snow/ice/alpine too?

Some soft shells have a degree of insulating property, like an inner fleece etc. but originally I think they were intended more like a tough and somewhat breathable outer layer - one to wear over a base layer (if conditions are warmer) or over mid layers (if colder), and then you still have the option to put a hard shell or belay jacket on over the top.

Not quite sure about what might count as 'canvassy' but for a decent robust soft shell without additional insulation there are things like this:

https://www.mountain-equipment.co.uk/collections/womens-soft-shell/products... (lighter)

https://www.mountain-equipment.co.uk/collections/womens-soft-shell/products... (mid weight)

Or for ones that are more protective and/or warmer:

https://www.mountain-equipment.co.uk/collections/womens-soft-shell/products... (looks light but warm)

https://www.mountain-equipment.co.uk/collections/womens-soft-shell/products... (this is basically bombproof but maybe not as breathable and will probably run hot depending on conditions).

I've linked to Mountain Equipment as I like their stuff and somewhat know their range (no affiliation though) but Rab, Montane, Patagonia etc. will all have equivalents.

I wear a decathlon one for climbing. I've had it close to 10 years and it's still going. Very windproof, water resistant and after ten years of regular grit climbing it's still in good condition.

Alpkit Resolute is an absolute bargain at £68 (down from 80)

Pros: tough-enough-for-climbing fabric, genuinely windproof, capacious hood.

Cons: just one colour option – red chilli. (Not a con if that's the only colour you want).

You get so much bang for your buck with this brand don’t you? My Decathalon climbing trousers are some of the most durable I own and also the cheapest!

My Simond (Decathlon's climbing brand) one is still going after years of abuse. I wear it instead of a fleece most of the year. I trad climb and boulder in it and put the belay jacket on top when needed. Occasionally, I put the fleece on underneath when it's very cold.

Sorry I'm treating you as a beginner!

I bought my wife an ME Vulcan as I was sick of her pinching my old G2 jacket. She wears it on the long multi, mountain routes and the mixed/ice days as the cavernous hood fits really well over the helmet. She uses a synth belay jacket for cold cragging.
