On November 18th & 19th this year Oakwood Climbing Centre are hosting the world’s first Youth Climbing Symposium.

We have seen symposiums for women, coaches and for injury prevention, but until now the next generation have been left out. With the Olympics around the corner, concentrating on youth climbers is hugely important and with this event we want to inspire and educate our hopeful Olympians about how to train, condition and progress safely and effectively.

The coaches and athletes who are going to deliver this have been selected very carefully in order to achieve this.
Who better than 2 x World Champion and one of our own, Shauna Coxsey, to headline this event. After suffering from injury, bouncing back to retain her title was impressive to say the least. Her training is hard but always fun, her movement is second to none and her strength is futuristic. She will be joined by her team mate, training partner and best friend Leah Crane to deliver a workshop on dynamic movement. Understandably, this workshop is proving to be very popular.

Our next headline coach is none other than Patxi Usobiaga. Also a 2 x World Champion, Patxi has now turned his training knowledge to coaching others. Although Patxi does coach hundreds of climbers, he is also the person who some of the best have turned to for help. Chris Sharma, Adam Ondra, Sasha Digiulian, Edu Marin and Dani Andrada all trust Patxi’s expertise for both competition and rock climbing training. His workshops are becoming legendary and we are very much looking forward to the British youth experiencing this training session.

Udo Neumann, the man behind the German bouldering Team and responsible for coaching many of the world’s top climbers when it comes to dynamic movement and understanding body control. Innovative methods of training that are fundamentally fun. This workshop is going to be great for climbers of all ages.

Dicki Korb and Patrick Matros, aka Gimme Kraft – the men who coached Alex Megos to onsight 9a not once, but twice! These guys are industry leaders in functional movement, mobility and athlete profiling. In order to be a good athlete, we need to make sure you are not going to be broken or retire early. This is especially important with youth climbers and cannot be missed if this is your primary sport.

Alongside this, we have some very exciting coaches and athletes delivering workshops over the weekend;

Does the name Melissa Le Neve ring a bell? Well it should do as she is one of France’s most successful competition climbers and she is equally impressive on rock too. Having secured countless podium positions as well as climbing V12 and 8c+ Melissa is no stranger to the pressures of competitions nor redpoint or project stress. On the day Melissa will be helping the next generation be far more prepared on the day - how to approach the competition or redpoint, how to create a successful routine and how to keep control of your nerves. As well as this, she will be helping our youngsters face the modern style of competition climbing.

Madeleine Eppensteiner – a lot of climbers will acknowledge that their weakness is their head game. The pressures of competition, being watched – dynamic moves, the fear of falling, confidence – it plays such a key role in climbing. Madeleine is an expert when it comes to this and works with a lot of climbers internationally. This is arguably the most important workshop for any climber.

Louis Parkinson – aka Captain Cutloose – the king of the swingers, this man knows how to work around power and use movement to his advantage. If you are a static climber lacking some oomph, this one is for you!

Ollie Torr –an ex-gymnast who has turned to climbing and now helps hundreds of climbers achieve their goals through Lattice training. Ollie is going to be working on energy systems. How do you train for a 30m comp route in a bouldering centre? How do you train for your 40m project indoors or your 2 move power problem? Ollie will show you the way. If you are serious about training, then you will learn a lot in this session.

Tom Greenall – ex GB team coach, Tom knows more than most when it comes to tactics and comp preparation. Even the most accomplished climbers crumble under pressure, so having that routine and knowing what to do on the day to stay in the zone is invaluable. Where do the best fall down? Tom will tell you – he will make a real difference to your competition day.

Augmented Reality – one of the coolest additions to the climbing scene. A computer game on a climbing wall? Yep – not only is it seriously fun, we are also going to explore the setting world and challenge our youth climbers to climb problems set by our headline coaches, but also we will get some youth climbers to set problems for our headliners to climb too.

This event is going to take place at one of the newest climbing facilities in Britain, the state-of-the-art Oakwood Climbing Centre in Wokingham, Berkshire.

Spaces are limited and this really is an event not to be missed, please go to http://www.youthclimbingsymposium.com to find out more and to book your place now.
