I did it about 4 years ago. Yes you need to bring glacier equipment. You don't need to rope up when moving but have your harness and gear on and the rope in the bag.
8 years ago, my experience was the same as cyberpunk. I'd also add that depending on the make up of your group, a rope could be useful if you intend to reach some summits, like the Dreilanderspitze
Think I've read in the Eagle Ski Club journal that some cols which previously were skiable now involve some mixed climbing &/or abseils - worth checking with hut wardens.
