So I’ve flicked through my trad guide books cover to cover & now I’m resorting to bouldering guidebooks. I’m not always clear on some of the descriptions; one of the lines talks about a ‘good monkey-up-a-stick line’. What does that mean?

If you're familiar with top pitch of Direct Route (VS 5b), the bit after the hard move has been described as "monkey up a stick".
Basically imagine a tree about a foot wide and climbing that by hands gripping round (both sides of) the tree and feet placed against front of the tree.
