Is the parking on the north side of the Cheddar gorge Road still free parking? 

Depends whereabouts. Lots of the bits closer to town are now pay and display. There's space for a few cars next to the wave though there was a bit of a crevase when I was there a few months ago. I think the parking further up the gorge from there on the north side is still free.

There's room for quite a few cars next to Stepped Wall (free).

Anything on the North side not marked as pay and display is free, basically all the unmade road bits/grass verge.
