Jonathan Conville Memorial Trust  - Applications now open for all 2024 courses

The Jonathan Conville Memorial Trust (JCMT) is a charity which offers subsidised mountain training to young people who want to make the leap from climbing and hillwalking to mountaineering.  Full details of the courses and the application form can be found at:  https://www.jcmt.org.uk/courses

The Trust runs a programme of three courses through the year:

- Scottish Winter Mountaineering course in January

- Alpine Preparation Weekend in North Wales in April

- Alpine Mountaineering Course in Chamonix, France from mid-June to mid-July.

The courses are aimed at UK-based climbers or hillwalkers, aged between 18-30, who already have some UK climbing or hillwalking experience and are motivated to take the next steps into Scottish Winter or alpine climbing, but do not have the means to do so. The courses are not designed for absolute beginners or those wanting to ‘try mountaineering’, but instead for individuals with some prior climbing/mountain walking experience and the desire to upskill. The Trust actively encourages applications from young people of all backgrounds.

Applicants who wish to apply must be between 18-30 years old at the time of the course.

The timeline for course applications has now changed. In a departure from previous years, the window to apply for all 2024 courses is now open. There are separate closing dates for each course as they approach.

The Scottish Winter Mountaineering course, based in the Cairngorms during weekends in January offers participants essential skills for Scottish Winter conditions.  Applications for the Scottish Winter Mountaineering course in Jan 2024 are currently open and will close on 13th October 2023.

The Alpine Preparation weekend course based near Llanberis, North Wales in April and May trains participants in the basics of alpine rope work and core skills that are required to climb safely in an alpine environment. Applications for the Alpine Preparation Weekend in April 2024 are currently open and will close on 5th January 2024.

The Alpine Mountaineering Course is delivered over three days in Chamonix, France during June and July. Applications for the Alpine Mountaineering course in Chamonix during Summer 2024 are currently open and will close on 16th February 2024.

Due to increased demand, applicants may only attend one course in 2024. Unsuccessful Scottish course applicants are welcome to submit a second application for the Alpine Mountaineering course.

The Jonathan Conville Memorial Trust is the biggest UK-based provider of technical mountaineering courses to young people in the UK and has been operating for over 40 years. This year over 210 people attended the three courses. Despite contributions from the BMC and SMT, the number of applications always outstrips the number of places available. The Trust aims to increase the provision of courses, but it can only do this with donations. You can support the work of the Trust by providing a donation which will go directly to providing places – visit: https://www.jcmt.org.uk/donate
