As can be imagined, the recent rains have done nothing to improve the path up to Scot's Crags at Scugdale. The National Park Ranger has been up to assess the issues and to return the stones to the wall that had been used to create a causeway.  A plan of work to cover the bridleway up to Barker's Crags is being drawn up. It will involve the National Park, tennant farmer, contractors and a Cleveland Mountaineering Club workparty ( and any other volunteers.

Please be patient, and in the interim once the rock is dry enough to climb on, wellies might be preferable to approach shoes.

Thanks for the update, was there any answers / more info as to the rock smashing at the crag a few months ago?

With regard to the mindless vandalism of some months ago, efforts were made to establish who was responsible. There was a commendable response from the National Park Ranger and the BMC Access Officer provided advice. The Ranger liaised with the police and farmer but legally the offence was committed against the landowner. Attempts were made to identify any cctv footage on the road without success, although it's possible the perpetrators arrived other than by the road.

One positive was a clearing up exercise, undertaken informally by a CMC workparty and other individuals. There were additional offers to help by good folk on here, but it wasn't necessary to take them up in the end, but thanks anyway. Much of the mess has weathered in, but there remain some large blocks as a stark reminder of the sad event.

Well done CMC on all fronts.

I haven't been up to Scugdale for about 3 years but am fond of the place, like many.
