An adder is reported to be nesting in the back of Square Chimney. The snake was in a crack well in the back of the chimney, so may not be seen when placing gear or a jam. For your own safety it is advisable to avoid the route for now.

I think it unlikely the adder is 'nesting'. Most snakes do lay eggs but adders are viviparous, giving birth in late summer, and it doesn't sound like a likely spot for a hibernacula or habitual basking spot either. If there were eggs it would be a grass snake, although they are usually laid somewhere well insulated. If an adder I think it's more likely the snake was just passing through. Great to hear there are snakes at Caley though!

An obvious place to find a reptile with such an interest in mathematics!

I love adders. The prettiest of all our snakes. When I worked on Cumbria peat bogs I used to see them all the time. They have a really hard time. The last recorded adder in notts was clubbed to death
