The lower Sea valley. On the far background it's visible the a notch on the mountain ridge - it's the Ghicet di Sea, the gateway from the Ala valley into Sea. One of the wildest spots of the Western Alps, Sea has been saved from "development" by a serious hydrogeological instability. However, this valley has been exploited for wood at least from late Roman times, mostly to feed the iron furnaces of the Val Grande. When the wood finished (by late XVII century) the valley was completely abandoned, apart from few herders huts.
By late 70's, the big rock crags of the lower valley started to be explored first by Giampiero Motti (the "founder" of the Nuovo Mattino climbing movement), and later by Giancarlo Grassi, who opened on Sea dozen of tough climbs. One of the highest crags here is the Throne of Osiris, prominent in this picture.
Here is shown just a small section of the Valley, that continue for kilometers until the junction of the main alpine watershed
