Please explain is the climber upside down and alive!

I think that this was the climbers first winter lead - he placed a friend in a horizontal crack for protection and was knocked down by an avalanche. The friend held the fall and the climber was (mostly!) unhurt, although, the solid shaft of the friend was bent. His second made him stay upside down on the ropes until he had taken a photo. The climber went on to enjoy a full and happy career of avalanche taunting; he still climbs regulary.
