Don't those spiky things damage the rock (climb)?

Looks quite icy icy in the photo which is unsurprising as Its a drainage line thats been wet everytime ive been in there (during dry spells). Probably better suited to a winter line.

@john stainforth indeed they can add some scratches, the route was largely plastered in cruddy ice in the corners if you see the other photo and was in good winter condition, so minimal damage. This pitch was more snowed up rock / lightly rimed however.

Guess it's a kind of aid climbing really but with removable. pitons. More about brawn than technique
