andi_e - 04/Dec/05
why isn't the belayer looking at him!?!
tombo - 05/Dec/05
In reply to Tombo:
How can you tell?
CurlyStevo - 05/Dec/05
His eyes seem to be focussed on him! Maybe they're closed - I can't tell! Great photo!
Jules C - 05/Dec/05
Sorry my mistake! Mustn't have been wearing my glasses or was drunk or something. "Very bold and inspiring climb" I should have said...
tombo - 06/Dec/05
Great photo.... and runner or not, he's still gonna have a heavy landing!!
Scotti - 08/Dec/05
That's an appointment I'd be happy to miss. Good shot, nicely composed, good perspective and context. Oh, almost forgot, compliments to Sam too!
Wry Spudding - 08/Dec/05
Was this photo published in climber?
fenclimb - 08/Dec/05
wasn't this photo using in a fiveten advert?
It is a brill photo and scares me to death!
craigmarksmith - 09/Dec/05
why bother with the runner at all? To keep his body from rag-dolling down the hill after impact, thus making recovery easier? free soloing with a rope and harness on is still free soloing.*angle/perspective could be fore-shortened in this pic, if so disregard above comments.*
norskagent - 09/Dec/05
Thanks for all the comments. Yes the photo was published in Climber, no it wasn't used in a 5.10 ad (that was Dave Simmo's pic from a lower angle)
As to why bother with the runner - the belayer is on a ledge at least 20' above the ground, not obvious from this angle, admittedly, so (hopefully!) giving a bit more leeway than appears...
Adam Long - 10/Dec/05
Crikey! Best grit pic I've ever seen. The photo sums up the route name nicely.

Is there a runner on or near the arete to make a.w.f "only" E7? Does this route move right on those chalked up slopey green micro edges - aargh! Respect
JonnyL - 12/Dec/05
There's a rotton old bolt underneath the prow that in theory mitigates awf - and I think the hardsest bit technically is meant to be getting across to the arete.
Phenomenal pieces of climbing both of them. Hope he didn't tell his mum!
Moacs - 13/Dec/05
One of the most inspiring pics ive ever seen. Show your mum- she'd be proud!
camw - 15/Dec/05

dispeller - 06/Sep/06
In reply to tombo thet belayer is definately looking at Sam. This is an fantastic photo of an equally fantastic line any one know the grade?
halo - 11/Sep/06
Surely Whimpering Whimberry would be even better as a name but maybe has been used before. Still a scary situation to be in. What grade?
Lone Rider - 08/Nov/06
good grief
jtree03 - 20/Nov/06
It is a stunning photo, at an amazing crag. Think the grade was E8/9 6c.
craig h - 07/Oct/07
awesome stuff, love this pic
shortyx - 08/Oct/07
Scarey scarey scarey....
Still one of the best names for a climb I've ever known!!!
Andy S - 18/Feb/08
This photo is amazing! Despite probably never being able to climb that hard or bold, this picture puts me into that moment of fear (though the climber may not have been feeling that). A stunning aesthetic photo with emotive content. Looks like he's been shot at by the chalk firing death squad!
tommyzero - 20/Jun/08
I'm ashamed to say I have a copy of this pic pinned to my notice board at work. I've looked at it a million times and it still makes my balls shrink. Probably one of my favourite pieces of climbing porn - v. nice work.
Dave Foster - 05/Jul/08
I'd be too scared to belay someone on this route - let alone climb it! Amazing.
