why bother with the runner at all? To keep his body from rag-dolling down the hill after impact, thus making recovery easier? free soloing with a rope and harness on is still free soloing.*angle/perspective could be fore-shortened in this pic, if so disregard above comments.*

Thanks for all the comments. Yes the photo was published in Climber, no it wasn't used in a 5.10 ad (that was Dave Simmo's pic from a lower angle)
As to why bother with the runner - the belayer is on a ledge at least 20' above the ground, not obvious from this angle, admittedly, so (hopefully!) giving a bit more leeway than appears...

There's a rotton old bolt underneath the prow that in theory mitigates awf - and I think the hardsest bit technically is meant to be getting across to the arete.

This photo is amazing! Despite probably never being able to climb that hard or bold, this picture puts me into that moment of fear (though the climber may not have been feeling that). A stunning aesthetic photo with emotive content. Looks like he's been shot at by the chalk firing death squad!
