You're trailing a rope, so surely you are leading the route but just can't find any (non-existent) gear :-)
Unless you promise that you were never contemplating putting any gear in even if it appeared miraculously and that the rope was merely to abseil back down on :-)

Do you see a belayer holding the end of those ropes?!
I had them clipped to my harness on a bite; they were purely to avoid having to do the allegedly terrifying scramble off the back.
