Great period photo. Boots, no harness, a runner every thirty feet maybe (or maybe not). Properly brave climbing.

Yes things have changed, in the most part for the better. Very often a lead climber would virtually solo a pitch, any attempt at placing protection being of little true effect in the event of a fall. No wonder rule number one in those days was "The leader must not fall".
