Sadly, the Baroude refuge was destroyed by fire last October. It was an immensely popular destination for walkers, allowing them to spend a night in place that can only be described as 'grandiose' !
Thirty years ago, Baroude was the site of my first true climb in the Pyrénées, right in the middle of the impressive limestone wall that rises to over 3000m's. Belays on pegs and Galibier Brenva's on my feet, the things that legends are made of !
No decision about rebuilding has of yet been taken.

Update
The Baroude hut-keeper is now at the Arremoulit refuge. He told me a few weeks ago that the matter of the insurance claim is before the courts as the insurers refused to pay-up.
