Do you use ND filters? seems very dark at the top of the frame.

How would a neutral density filter produce this effect?

Which effect are you referring to? The ND filter would help balance the exposure between the sky and foreground.

Its a 3 stop grey grad filter (couldn't afford a neutral density filter). Ideally, I shouldv'e used a 1 or 2 stop, but only had a 3 stop with me...

I thought ND filters were for slowing the exposure time -- you need graduated filters to balance parts of the image.
