Something that made a big difference to me was doing some overnight runs. For example I went to the end of Loch Treig on a Friday after work, set off about 9pm and ran through the night to the ruins at Loche Eilde Mor where I bivvied. As well as night nav practice and route familiarisation it let me see how I handled running while tired and how my eating was in the wee small hours, something lots of people struggle with.

Apparently we can actual take in up to double the carbs quoted per hour (120 instead of 60) although that requires carrying A LOT of food!
