Imagine an Olympic standard white water canoe slalom course, the world’s largest climbing wall, the first indoor surfing centre in this country, a sky diving centre, the UK’s first artificial canyon, the world’s largest ice climbing wall, a caving system, high ropes course and the countries longest zip slide all sited on an 327 acre ex-coalfield site adjoining the Rother Valley Country Park in South Yorkshire.

XTREEEEEEEM.

Sounds like it mixes the worst shopping mall from hell aspects of Xscape with an even bigger white elephant (that the right phrase?) potential than Ratho. Potentially an inspiring idea in theory but is it really going to be run in the spirit of adventure activities and is it really going to be successful??

"This is not a theme park, this is a destination"

yeah, right.

If there's a lake they can call it Rother-Mere.

In reply to Fiend: thats what i thught. that kind of thing would cost a fortune. is there really a market for something that big. with xscape and the peak district so close?

In reply to ceri:
You have to wonder if it will stay afloat.
Mind you it will proably keep some of the idiots away from the crags
Wingman@work 31 Jul 2006
In reply to Fiend:

I should think it will make an absolute fortune - it will be filled with wannabeees and become a large 'family destination' - mum and daughter can shop while the boys go and play.

As for the problems with Peak so close, one phrase 'bad weather'.

I've not read the links properly but would just like to know if anyone knows if this has got the go ahead, has got through planning etc... or whether it's just at speculation stage (although I guess it would be weird to be telling the press about it if it wasn't already reasonably secure).

Not a lot of detail on the web site - maybe the planning application has more. I've become quite sceptical about all these schemes that got floated, reported in the local press, but never seem to get off the ground. Reminds me a bit of the Viz stories about Tipton vying for EuroDisney or the Olympics.

For the last 5 years there have been stories about the planned transformation of the Ski Village into a indoor dome. No sign of it happening, but the existing business has been really badly neglected and must be losing money at an appaling rate.

As for these proposals, I can see the logic. Theme parks are passe, everybody wants a more genuine thrill and even cruise ships have climbing walls (would any climber ever go on a cruise - my worst nightmare). But mix in elements of Centre Parks and XScape and you might have a winner. And bear in mind we are not the target market

No question about it, this would be an energy sucking environmental catastrophe. While we do our little bit by buying ecofriendly lighbulbs and recycling a few carboard boxes we condone this kind of atrocity in the name of fun.
Planting a forest would provide way more pleasure to the soul of anyone with half a right to exist. Sorry, but this kind of nonsense makes my head ache. I may run out of power soon as the wind turbine on my wigwam seems to be making a funny nois.................

In reply to Wingman@work: The Rother valley is in the Peak rain shadow and really rather sunny a lot of the time.

I'm sure if they get the pricing structure right they'll make a mint out of the corporate t**ts and wanabees who want to live "on the edge" whilst in reality being safely cocooned. Good luck to them.

What's wrong with paddling in rivers, climbing on the crags, surfing in the sea and skydiving from a plane?

- also - regeneration of old pit areas in S yorks ain't too much of a bad thing I guess - no??

In reply to Simon:

yeah... my interest is 'cause there's something not dissimiar to parts of this development, being developed for the castleford complex where Xscape is...
In reply to CJD: lets hope its better than castleford where when I went one could have an "experience" of climbing but only once attached to a bunjee and not actually climbing a real wall ( if there is such a thing as a real wall).

Personally I think people should go and do stuff for real instead of in a manufactured surrounding where they can have an "experience" for a price.

Except sex of course now that would be good. Come to SeXscape at Castleford for a seXual experiece. Just pay and have it away! Corker of an idea and very inclusive of all members of society. Should get a wopping lottery grant cos even minorities can do it if not minors.
In reply to Fawksey: But there arent any miners left in Castleford or Rotherham (thanks Maggie) so why would you need worry about them.

ah, the thing I'm talking about is something I can't discuss (unfortunately) but it's something other than Xscape.

um... not sure that Castleford has the richest pickings in terms of staffing opportunities for such a venture :-S

In reply to Mick Ryan - UKClimbing.com: It sounds like a good idea, but is it gonna be really expensive to get in. Like Xscape and only good for corperate events.
In reply to GraemeA at home: Do I detect a bit of a champagne socialist?

Its a bit of a bugger but one couldnt really get the stuff out of the ground cheaper than the Polish would do it for and it werent half mucking up the environment. Also how many kids siad "I'll not work down pit" and how many fathers said "I dont want our kid working down pit"
In reply to Fawksey: I like champagne but can't afford it everyday.

sExscape, minors, miners, geddit.
In reply to GraemeA at home: God I am so fookin dull sometimes
