Hi

I'm looking for suggestions for a lightweight down jacket for mainly summer use and as a thermal layer under a coat.

It must pack small and have a hood. Oh and not too pricey. If it packs into its own pocket or small stuff sack then all the better.

Many thanks

Decathlon do a relatively inexpensive one that packs into its own pocket.

I've just bought a Montane Anti Freeze from SportsShoes.com.  Only currently available in Small and XL, half price at £100.  Ticks all your boxes.

This looks to be the closest to the little Wed'ze jacket I've had for ten or more years. But the limited availability suggests it is discontinued/end of season. They have plenty of others, but few hoods, and more expensive.

Yeah, that's the one. I've got an older version of it before it was branded as a "Forclaz".

I got hold of a Rab Mythic G and it’s amazing; super light and super warm. There’s a review here somewhere I think - their warmest per gram so far I believe. It is pricey though.

I've got that new decathlon one, with the smallest amount of down. I think it would work well underneath an outer.

There’s never a time I won’t say Patagonia, in my opinion there the highest quality

I would recommend looking on Vinted - I have gotten some fantastic deals for very lightly used stuff from there, and they generally have quite a variety. In terms of recommending a coat, I would have to agree with @Ollie Hawgood - patagonia is fantastic.

I've just been through the same exercise, buying a few different options and then sending a few back. My old RAB microlight was too small and I'm going to Indian Creek next month, so wanted something for the cold / hopefully dry weather.

My favourite (price no object) was the Arcteryx Cerium Hybrid. I like design and I think the idea behind it is cool. The item felt really well-executed and thoughtful. But it is quite thin and so is probably perfect only for doing something hardcore alpine where every gram matters. While I like to occasionally imagine I'll get a trip of that nature in the diary, the reality is it was probably too specialised given the price (£££) and the low probability of doing that sort of stuff. Basically would have been a vanity acquisition.

In the end I went for a plain RAB Microlight. Honorable mention for the RAB Mythic Alpine which was lighter and more 'alpine' than the Microlight, but felt it would tear easily.

I also tried a patagonia down sweater option but it felt thicker and heavier than the microlight. Plus the aesthetic was a little bit "centerist dad" on the way to a fancy coffee shop. Which probably accurately describes me, hence the concern...

(Facewest has offers on them all and they seem nice guys)

Since we're all now disregarding the OPs cost criteria I strongly recommend the Mont-Bell ex-light down anorak at 224g, a lovely bit of kit.

I got a Haglofs LIM as my evening/warm layer for a trip to the Pyrenees last summer. It's probably about the level of warmth you want, and it's both really comfortable (feels like you're not wearing it) and light/packable.

Thank you to all for your advice.

Managed to get a Montane Synergy cheap.

Thank you once again

I bought a Montane Featherlite hooded down jacket about this time last year and it does the job the OP describes just fine. It's light, packable and keeps me warm when static in coldish UK conditions and yet is not too stifling when on the move. It probably wouldn't have been my first choice if money was no object, but it cost £40 on ebay and was just about as new. It didn't take too much finding, either; there seemed to be a few by Rab, ME etc at that time of year.

I don't want to be a naysayers but "Nay! Nay!"

If you wear it over a other layer, there's a time and a place for down, but under a coat (especially if that coat is not a really soft/light down) is problematic as down gets squashed. The loftier and warmer it is the more badly it'll suffer from being underneath. Nope, go for a synthetic like a nano puff or something. How about this instead of down for going underneath, I have one myself and use it for the purpose you describe. Light soft packs small into its pocket https://www.sportsshoes.com/product/hel2078/helly-hansen-lifaloft-insulated...

Looks good, however I love the fact that the technical specification appears to avoid its WEIGHT!

Rab Mythic Alpine Light. Just purchased one after buying the vest.  Both awesome bits of kit.

Without a hood and in men's size large it is 13 ounces / 369g

Personally after some wear and washes mine is still warmer than a fleece, but more windproof, lighter, softer, more sweat dispersing and packs far better  than any fleece, into its own pocket. But stupidly neither pocket has a reversible zip WHY??? so if you fully close the zip it's a pig to open again, so always leave a finger space opening. Such a stupid detail to get wrong. I have no other faults with it, I wash it with nikwax waterproofing, wear it underneath boiler suits, outdoor jackets, etc. I'm pleased I got it.
