Does anyone know of any geology based climbing courses ?

Sort of thing where you would climb during the day and then a few talks /lectures during the evening where you would learn about the geology of rock within the UK too how different areas where formed and about the rock types etc ??

Cheers

In reply to Matthew Newhouse: No, sadly not tho' I'd rather get the lectures in the field.  It could easily be done and made very good - I've been to a lot of crags on field trips, Annot being a bit of a standout

I know someone locally who offers walking & geology outings but I don't think she climbs (or at least isn't qualified to teach climbing).  And she's based in the French Alps rather than the UK.

But judging by the number of climbers I've met over the years who studied geology at university (both undergrad & postgrad) there must be someone who could do this.

Your best option might be to seek out a guide or instructor with good knowledge or a qualification in geology and gather some friends together to book a few days training with them.

Rocky rambles in Snowdonia is a decent book as a start point, but the routes are scrambles at most, not climbs.

Straining my brain a little (it was 20 plus years ago) Carlo Forte I'm sure has some geology or similar background from chats we had on an MIA assessment course. Also Mike Raine has published a nature book. If they can't help I'm sure they can point you in the right direction. Just google up their contact details.

David Dobson from One minute Geology is brilliant!!

I've spent a few days in the field with him On Stob Ban and Am Bodach and he has an amazing way of simplifying things without trivialising them.

There are lots, try googling geology tours.  Also lots of clubs and MTA organise walks.

It you want to DIY then Paul Gannon's books are excellent

I don’t know of anything structured exactly like that but I’ve been guided on Skye a couple of times by Mike Lates’ people and they have pointed out geological features as we scrambled / walked. I’ve never been guided by Mike Mason (he’s a newish guide for Mike Lates) but he apparently has a degree in geology: https://skyeguides.co.uk/your-guides/mike-mason-mci/

Cheers for the advice guys
