I'm been wondering how people remove rusty hardware (mallions, screwgates etc) from otherwise ok stainless fixed hangers?

What's typically used - angle grinder? Dremel? Hacksaw? Bolt cutters? Something else? Or is it simply a case of personal preference and whatever you've got easy access to (out of the above options).

If it is just one or two... Small maillions and any size ally krab are all quite doable with a junior hacksaw (full-size better). Use mole grips to hold them still while sawing. Make sure it's a new blade.

I've used various power tools from rope including grinders and it's a LOT of hassle plus a lot of safety and rescue considerations so the less power tools use on rope (beyond just a simple hole drilling)  the better IMHO

Angle grinder is the easiest but scariest.

Hacksaw is fine but takes a bit longer obviously. Wear gloves and try and weight the krab/maillon with a foot loop to stop it moving. Loudly cursing whoever left the rusting rubbish will help with the effort.

Take some spare 316  hangers( and nuts in case you fumble fork) Spanner off the offending clogged hanger. Replace with appropriate ring hanger. Sort out offending rusty stuff in the calm of your vice/ workshop/ shed etc.

In reply to LukeDclimber:

Get some replacement hangers/ belay rings from your local boltfund/ shop.Remove clogged hanger from bolt with approp spanner. Replace hangers as approp. Sort out the mess in comfort at ground level in your "shed" then re use the unclogged hanger as approp
