I watched the RAF practise (at least, I assume it was a practise!) this on the northern rim of Glyder Fach, before swooping down a couple of hundred feet. It looked brill!
They have a guy hanging out the back watching very carefully.
There has been lots of practice doing stuff like this in Afghanistan with deplaning / emplaning on steep hillsides, rooftops etc so I imagine most Chinook pilots are very well versed in this kind of flying.
Helicopter pilots in general have amazing spatial awareness , watched one park his car in a really small awkward space once. Did it first go, really quickly without batting an eyelid whilest chatting away to me.
