Any recommendations for a good van converter - thinking VW T28 - in Scotland/north of England? City centre on street parking and lack of competence are likely to preclude doing it myself...

Nothing purchased yet, just trying to weigh up overall costs/practicalities of throwing money at the problem versus trying to find a viable workspace!

Caledonian Conversions in Clydebank are worth a look. They specialise in VWs. I haven't used them personally, but I have friends who had a Transit Custom converted by them and it's a marvellous job.

There is a guy who specialises in converting VW vans in Burneside, just outside Kendal. He's competent enough, I'd say - he's done the odd job on my van. Let me know if you want more info.

Mill Garage in Duns did mine. Fantastic job with several non standard features. They also found an ideal base van at a good price.

caledonian campers in dumbarton (as mentioned above) and Rockin Vans in Kilmarnock seem to be two of the main players in the west, but they both seem to have big waiting lists at the moment. Aug for fitting two windows was what I was quoted recently. Mind you, Rockin Vans do amazing work, so it might be worth the wait.
Vanguard in fort william have a good rep apparently, but think they're closed for a move of location.

You could also try Jerba campervans near Berwick. An approved vw converter no less! Ours is fantastic.

+1 for Caledonian Conversions - they did an ingenious conversion that included a toilet & shower on my LWB Hiace.

As mentioned above it's the start of the motorhome season now so expect a long waiting list but if you leave it 'til the winter it'll be a much quicker turnaround. My conversion was completed in about a month from first contacting them in December.

Sounds like good advice - will give me time to shake every penny out of the piggy bank too!
