Some great quarries in the UK, for me the Dinorwic Slate Quarries is top of the list.

So what's your favourite UK quarry?.....

Here are a few that may challenge people's perceptions of a quarry

Stanage

Froggatt

Hay tor Low Man

Stone Farm

Harrison's Rocks

Chudleigh

...and according to UKC the most popular non grit crag in the UK is The Cuttings, which, although not a quarry, is quarried limestone, and is on Portland; which is essentially a very large quarry!

Agreed.  Most of my very best climbing experiences have been on slate, and most of the really memorable routes I've done.

In reply to scott titt:

Harrison's is a natural outcrop. Some signs of very ancient quarrying in a few places (e.g the eastern? Unclimbed Wall end. It's the freaky, anomalous nature of the s/e sandstone outcrops that is one of their charms. Somehow so unexpected. (I think, geologically, they take quite a lot of explaining ... why those widely scattered freaks pop up exactly where they do. Something to do with hardening by water containing lots of iron, I think.)

In reply to Sl@te Head:

Given the size Dinorwic should win but pound for pound Millstone

It would be houghton if it was open all year.

That was my thinking, too. I was going to post exactly that comment on the other quarry thread, until I saw it was about overseas quarries...

For aesthetics yes, almost as if the quarrymen were designing sick aretes and walls for future generations. Ditto Rainbow Slab.

Having been the one to discover Limekilns I have to like your comment even though I don't agree with it!

Pant Quarry in South Wales is/was pretty spectacular.
Unfortunately, it is deemed as a working quarry and therefore banned.

You wouldn't want to climb at HOGHTON all year round. Maybe more than what can be had right now, but it isn't the kind of place that is anywhere near its best for a good proportion of most years.

Hobson Moor must be my favourite as I have probably been over 100 times. If it were not my favourite then why am I wasting my time going there? It is definitely a love / hate relationship though. I would certainly not recommend anyone travel any real distance to get there. Most quarries attract a local aspect which is their appeal.

In reply to Sl@te Head:

Tyddyn Hywel or Penmaen West mainly because of associations with decent quality first ascents but in both cases I also like the environment.

It has to be Horseshoe Quarry its BMC owned so it well maintained regarding the bolts and of course the rock itself. Some routes being decommissioned however, its a great place to climb.

The main wall looks to be undisturbed by activity, hopefully will get the chance to get back on it one day - a great sheet of featured limestone
