Was there ever a belay stake? There wasn't one about 10 years ago when I did it. Another option is to miss out the last few metres (or downclimb if you're already at the top when you realise there's no belay) and traverse across to the Coral Seas lower off. It's still well worth doing like that and saves a lot of faff
