Just back from a day out with the kids (see "Dorset for Kids" thread) and used the "squeeze chimney" route to get down to the bottom of Battleship...last time I did this it was just a mudchute, so a huge thanks to whoever put in a *lot* of work installing the steps, chain, via ferrata etc. It was still pretty hairy for 10 year olds but in retrospect they loved it (daughter even wanted to do it again but we escaped on the path above the Veranda...which I thought was worse!)

In reply to Nic:

Glad the kids and you enjoyed yourselves. A lot of work did go into those steps - by a lot of people. They were intended for climbing access. Because they're photogenic, locals have posted some (lovely) photos on social media. Unfortunately this tends to encourage non-climbers down them. Not a good idea, particularly in the wet.

The Veranda access is generally more amenable going up than down. Can be tricky going down, even with the fixed rope, particularly when very wet (rare) or (less rare) when it's so dry the soil is like ball bearings.

Always best to be careful!
