Ivar seems to have done some very notable early ascents but I’ve read nothing about him. Wondering if there is anything out there about him.

Was that the chap who did High Neb Buttress a century or so ago? If so the guidebook mentioned he was a Norwegian doing something like an apprenticeship in the steel industry in Sheffield for a number of years IIRC.

Shamelessly borrowed from Mike Cheque I should add.

He gets a short section dedicated to him in Hard Grit.

In reply to Offwidth:

His solo first ascent of Cave Arete Indirect was about 3 decades ahead of its time, imho.

In reply to JimR:

High Peak by Eric Byne & Geoff Sutton devotes a couple of pages to his achievements and includes four pictures of him climbing.

In reply to JimR:

Peak Rock has a section on him, "Harry Kelly and Ivar Berg: Two Gritstone Tigers". He was a Norwegian who only lived in England for two years and was a friend of Alf Schaanning, who introduced him to climbing.

In reply to galpinos:

Does anyone know if carried on climbing back in Norway? At least in the North, so much of the early ascents were done by visiting Brits. From memory there didn't seem to be too much activity done by Norwegians until post WWII.

No idea Toby, nothing in Peak Rock on what he went on to do.

Although Harry Kelly (no relation) also did it that same week…

It’s Schaaning’s photo, and probably still technically under copyright?!
