Not a significant or particularly exciting photo, but more just to say that I have noticed that those of us who didn't join UKC as members have gained the ability to post photos!

Maybe this has been the case for ages and I have been unobservant?

No, v recent.  My supporter thingamabob expired after it wasn't possible to renew it any more and I had a little whinge about when I noticed just a couple of days ago that I couldn't post pics any more.  (The mods were kind enough to extend my subscription for a bit to cover the gap - I wasn't expecting it to be this quick or probably wouldn't have moaned about it in the first place.)

Brilliant! Great photo by the way, where is that?

Can I post one of my favourites that I took at the head of Yosemite valley. The atmospheric nature of my pic hides a dark side, that the misty effect is caused by nearby forest fires rather than early morning mist. Still, a good photo I think.

Lochgilphead. Just my daily view 🙂 (yes, I am very smug about it!)

Yes, very nice photo 🙂 Shame it is caused by fires, but nice nonetheless

Ooh, not very sure. I'm going to guess somewhere in Englandshire, as I haven't seen a castle that shape in Scotland and also wouldn't expect to see the Union flag on a Scottish one. I would also presume a Welsh castle would have the Welsh flag.

Peckforton Castle in the foreground with Beeston Castle behind.

I spent a lot of the lockdowns wandering around the Cheshire sandstone ridge, the nearest hills I could sneak out to on the quiet backroads (but don't tell anyone).

Actually, how did you get that shot, was it with a drone? The next high ground from which you could theoretically slightly look down on Peckforton Castle is tree covered and I would have thought it would obscure the view.

it was taken from close to Stanner Nab. Bit of trespassing required😉 but no drone.

Right hills, wrong location. It's from Craig Cerrig Gleisiad the other side of the A470. I love the way they look a bit more isolated than they really are because of the cloud!

Nice one.
Haven't been in that area for years.  Will have to make an effort to go back as I only live on the wrong side of the bridge in England by a few miles and can see Pen y Fan and Corn Du from the highish ground near my house.
This one should be easy to identify.

The flood gates are open!

My best climb this week was a 2m ladder from the 7th floor landing onto the roof of a block of flats in the East of Berlin on New Year’s Eve. Maybe Hard VDiff with both a bottle and a full glass in my left hand. Single since 5 weeks, I‘d been facing a solo pub crawl, but I got a phone call at 6 in the evening and ended up celebrating midnight on the roof. Didn‘t get home til 7 the next evening and had to pay for it at the climbing wall the evening after that, but who cares

There can't be many places with two red sandstone castles so close to each other, even if one of them is a Victorian replica. Many years ago I actually "appeared" in the Robin Hood film that was made at Peckforton Castle, it was the one that didn't have Kevin Costner in it that Nobody went to see. I was an extra in the scene where the peasants stormed the castle.

I've trespassed on Stanner Nab myself but don't remember any clearings in the trees which would give that view, hence I wondered if it was a drone shot. Must have been trespassing in the wrong bit!

Looks like the Paps of Jura with possibly Islay off to the left. Climbed Beinn Bheigir on Islay in 2022 but Jura is for the future. Canoes of limited use today but what are the distant hills visible?

The path goes through a ‘cutting’ think there is a ruin on right. Scramble up embankment and viola! If this isn’t bang on I reckon if you mooch about a bit you’ll find it. Amazing view for Cheshire.

Friends of mine were extras in the same film.

I do conservation work with the Peregrines at Beeston and and saw a helicopter pick Jamie Vardy and his bride up from the tower at Peckforton.

Spot on. Lovely day beside the 'seaside' today. Plenty of folks out nearer the shore carpark.

That looks absolutely idyllic.  Love a bit of winter sunshine.  <jealous>

I really like living in Sheffield, but it's the sea kayak equivalent of being a climber in Cambridge - doses of Vitamin Sea fewer and further between than ideal.  (I was out enjoying a brief spell of equally lovely sunshine and tweety birdsong inland though, so mustn't grumble. )

OP girlymonkey 07 Jan 2024
In reply to deepsoup:

It was idyllic, we even saw otters 🙂

I have also lived in Sheffield (many years ago as an undergrad student), and while very far from the sea, it was great for cragging and biking.

I only started sea kayaking when I moved here. I tend to do whatever suits what is on my doorstep. Make the most of your native playground 🙂 So for now, I'm not really climbing much, but sea kayaking does scratch the itch nicely.
