Where else would I come for a near-impossible question but the UKC community ?

OK, here's all I can remember. It's preying on my mind, I have no idea why. If you can tell me the name of the movie you will win... my gratitude and public kudos. Damn, I might even drop a £5 in the MR tin for good karma on your behalf.

"Classic" black-and-white film. Very rural US setting. Teenage girl plays piano. Middle-aged guy (distant relative ? mentor ?) thinks she is pretty good (girl maybe isn't so bothered but neither character is terribly emotionally expressive, which is important to the plot.) Puts some considerable effort into taking her miles and miles and miles to play for some teacher/examiner/virtuoso so that her talent will not be wasted and because he's a nice guy. Turns out that according to this high-up piano player the girl is actually pretty mediocre, and high-up is ungracious giving her verdict, feeling her time has been wasted.

Crestfallen, they set off back home. On the way, the girl breaks the silence and chooses to show her appreciation by undoing the guy's trousers while he's driving her back, preparatory to... you can imagine for yourself, it's an old character study, not a porn movie. But there's no doubt it's sexual. In his surprise, he crashes the car well off the road.

At the accident scene, therefore, he is found unconscious with his flies undone and bits hanging out. The girl doesn't 'fess up, and he's sent to (I'm pretty sure) the electric chair.

Forgive me if I haven't got the plot quite right - I don't think he is hanged, but I'm pretty sure he is executed. Watched it years and years back.

Well, I've tried some reverse searches, Valossa, some searches on themes, but no joy. No idea of actors or title or anything much beyond the plot. I do remember being a bit taken aback, setting out to build up my movie education a bit or something and getting this barrel of chuckles.

Climb safe,

Y

You could have put 'spoiler alert' at the start. I was just about to watch it

I've seen it but it's not as old as you think it is, it's filmed in retro style and black and white. Thought it was coen brothers but it's not.

The plot sounds a lot like what you describe...

Yup. "the man who wasn't there"

The fantasy is crushed when a music teacher tells him that Abundas has no talent. On the way back from visiting the teacher, Abundas makes a pass at Ed and attempts to perform oral sex on him, causing Ed to lose control of the car and crash.

I think I watched it without paying 100% attention. I might go back and watch it again.

Coen bros had such a good run of films, think they might have gone bad now though. Either that or most films I see at the cinema now are U certificate.

I really liked “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” too.

In reply to Yanchik:

I'm sure if you Google the bit in the car, before the crash you'll get plenty of suggestions
