Driving to work yesterday I saw a flash of lightning ahead, didn't seem to strike up or down just a spot flash in the sky. As there were towering cumulus 15-20mi in the distance and there was no thunder I assumed it was distant, partly obscured by cloud however where it had been a new wispy cumulus cloud suddenly formed and as the road curved the cloud moved against the backdrop. I realised it was actually very close, <1km ahead and maybe 1-200m up. Given how close I was and by chance looking right at I definitely would have seen it strike down to earth, I'm sure it didn't, it was just a small localised discharge that created a fluffy new cloud!
Anyone seen lightning do something weird like that before? It was a new one on me!
