Wanting to replace the radio in the van to an aftermarket job. Simple enough I figured, but: there's a display screen on the dash that shows radio station, time etc, and a steering stalk control. I'm not bothered about having the dash display or even the stalk controls, so will a bog standard adapter cable do the trick? I've seen some going on about CAN bus and stuff but no idea what this does.
These things are never as easy as you think! I'd get a specialist to do it and save yourself a load of swearing. I've had a couple of radios fitted over the years - I don't remember it being expensive.
It's relatively straightforward to change a radio as they are basically plug and play, the tricky bit is getting the right plug for all the fancy stuff to work. For this reason I would go to a specialist car audio shop and they will tell you exactly what adaptors/weird bits of wire connections to get for it all to work, these are generally inexpensive compared to the cost of the new radio and will make for a much better user experience.
To actually answer your question, yes a bog standard adapter cable will probably work
