Does anyone out there know where I could get OS landranger maps printed at 1:25k scale (NOT the explorers, which are already at 1:25k) on A1 weather resistant paper? I dont need the detail shown on the Explorer maps, and the OS digital subscription only allows printing at up to A3, which doesn't cover enough area without going into multiple sheets.

Can't you export the pdf files that OS maps generates into jpgs or something and manually stitch them together?

I don't know, but try getting in touch with 'Hope Digital' and asking them perhaps?  https://www.aqua3.com/

Hi - I have been printing OS Explorer panels at 1:15k by doing the following hack, and it should get you up to at least A2, depending on the definition of print you want at the end.

in OS Maps, get the required area on your computer screen. Export screen to .pdf. Then open the .pdf and take a screenshot from selection of the whole map, then use Tools/adjust colour and set sharpness at 100% to enhance contours and sharpen the image. I'm using standard tools available on a MacBook.

With a bit of trial and error with the screen area I can get the scale at a repeatable 1:15k. This works for printing a 3x4km panel at 1:15k on A4, and I think area and definition will still be OK for a 6x4km panel on A3. (I'm debating whether to get an A3 printer). I've done an on screen check on land ranger and  this procedure should be good for say a 15 x 12km panel for you.

For weather resistance I do have to cover it with self adhesive film.

I'm not a computer whizz so I'm sure there are better hacks too .  Advice anyone ?

If you print to PDF, just use the scale option in the print dialogue in Acrobat Reader...

But the OP wants to print to a single A1 sheet. So a printing house of some sort is needed, or someone with a big printer. Water resistant paper printing will add to the challenge...

hpil - let us know how you get on - finding a reasonably cost effective route to printing large size maps on a waterproof medium would be very handy .  Thanks

Anquet (outdoor map navigator) will print on any size. I print A3 on tough print all the time. It will print up to whatever size you like, you can save that as a PDF and take it into a print house to finish

Have now got the map as a pdf, any particular print houses, paper types / thicknesses / material type recommended?

Go local. They can probably print and maybe even laminate on large scale, best if you can go in and chat about what you need

I had a poster-sized map printed from a pdf at a university print shop. They were really helpful. I’m pretty sure they didn’t offer water-resistant paper though.

Hi Phil,

MemoryMap can print 1:50000 at 1:25000. With CutePDF Writer as the "printer", you can produce a PDF at ISO A1-size (or larger!)

You will need the Windows version of MemoryMap plus relevant maps. It's currently about £42 for a perpetual licence for OS 1:50k.

To support large-format printing (bigger than A3), you also need the Professional option at £20 per year.

You should be able to take the PDF to a print shop and get it printed and laminated.

Cheers

Al

It's quite a faff, but if you are comfortable navigating OS's convoluted developer plans and APIs, you could just register there and download the GeoTIFFs directly and have them printed to your specs by any reputable printing shop of your choice.

https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/products

If I remember correctly, some of their customer plans offer a certain amount of premium geospatial data for free each month, and there was even a free, one‑time‑only 12‑month licence for developers with full premium map access for internal prototyping.

Though it's still a bit of a shame OS doesn't include the Explorer or Landranger series under the freely, publicly accessible Open Government Data licence like some other national map authorities do.

For example, I can freely download Swiss Topo's highly detailed maps, including their 1:10,000 edition, of all of Switzerland for absolutely free and as easily as selecting the tiles on their website here:

https://www.swisstopo.admin.ch/en/national-map-swiss-map-raster-10#Swiss-Ma...

(a small warning – the GeoTIFF files are really, really huge at 1:10,000 and might easily wreck your computer's default image viewer, you should use a specialised app to view them)

Yet the only maps freely available under Open Government Data licence in the UK are the useless 1:250,000.

As for printing, you might want to consider Tyvek paper. Though it might not be cheap, as only some wide‑format printers and dyes are suitable, laser printers are generally out and usually it only works with web printers (rolls, not sheets), so the shops are likely to charge extra for all that added faff, even if they do have a roll available in the first place.
