Tried to create a segment in Strava for the first time, managed it except seem to have created it as a private segment so now want to delete it - is this possible / how do I do it? 

yes, goto the segment page, select actions and you should get a drop down list to flag/edit/delete,refresh

Dashboard...My Segments..Created Segments...click on the segment to open it

Now the difficult bit - find the Actions menu - look over on the RHS, under Set a goal but it might be affected by other plugins (in my case Veloviewer)

There is a delete option on the Actions menu

No more creating strava segments for me, too complicated.
