Dogs on Bikes

Has anyone taken their dog on a bike trip (where it doesn't run along after you)?

If so what did you use to transport it, did it work well, would you have preferred something else?

We're looking at getting some kind of trailer as we're hopeful of doing some long cycle trips in the summer but our dog will be too young to go very far by foot.

And I'm finding that we're using the car a lot at the moment to get to parks/woodland as by the time we have walked the dog there we'd have to turn back due to the time he's allowed to walk as a pup. Going by bike would be a nice alternative and the shorter distances (5 min cycle) would hopefully start to get him used to a trailer.

He's a lively cocker spaniel so I think something contained would be best. Going to end up as a faitly little dog, but still circa 15kg.

I've thought about a smaller crate on a trailer (something like this: https://www.fawkes-cycles.co.uk/2474265/products/burley-flatbed-cargo-trail...)

Or perhaps one of the ones which are called dog trailers - though I'm wary of him just chewing through this type (like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Trixie-12813-Bicycle-Trailer-small/dp/B003OACOKW/r...)

I know they're a bit ridiculous, but it would be great to be able to take him on rides. Any experiences are welcome!

EDIT - whilst I'm asking this, I may as well ask if anyone has done the same with rucksacks for longer walks. We're stuck with two 20 minute walks a day for now. Would be great to carry him on some longer walks too (letting him off at intervals), but the amount of stuff on offer is a bit daunting! Is it even comfortable for a dog to be in those rucksacks things?

I followed a guy on a Tern GSD into London last year. He had a spaniel in each pannier.  They were loving it.

I am rapidly reaching the end of a 3000km trip (by bike, bus and boat) around Peru with my dog. In 3 days time we are going back into strict lockdown so we are sprinting for Lima now.

She sits in a trailer I had made- a friend made the metal frame and I made the wooden box- and is tied in in case she tried to get out. It is well padded, has a nice raincover, and I've mounted a solar panel on the tow arm. For significant uphills I'll let her out and she will trot alongside.

When I first got her, before I had the trailer, I put her in a box on the pannier rack for trips around Lima, but at 13kg I knew it would be a bit much on a longer trip, once bags were added. I also have a few things stored in the trailer, which helps.

I've put some photos on Instagram (john.vincent52) and feel free to PM me for any more details... Lockdown will give me plenty of free time!!

That would be great at the moment - but I don't think he would relax. I've tried in my normal rucksack and he's not a big fan! Maybe we just need to include more chicken in there...

That sounds brilliant! Sounds like a good old ride! I've sent a request to your instagram account.

Here's my collie on the road section of a 30 mile ride. He's happy to run with me on the off road sections and then into the back pack. I've also abseiled with him . It's a climbing pack from Decathlon. There are dog specific ones. He always seems happy enough.

As a somewhat out of breath former biker  I'm now thinking of going down the E-bike route.  I found an online mag specialising in all things E.  As the owner of a rowdy Husky an article in the mag appealed somewhat tempered only by the price & the suicidal problems of packing a Husky in one of the rickshaws.

If you're loaded though have a look at:   https://ebike-mtb.com/en/croozer-dog-xl-trailer-review/
