Took these off a specialised full sus and put XT on instead mainly because they are dot 5.1 and all our other mtb s are normal hydraulic fluid . I keep meaning to put them on eBay but I just had a look and they aren’t worth much. so the question is are they good enough to keep ? I seem to remember reading on here they were a pig to set up ? If so , off they go

Had Elixir 5 on a hard tail. They worked great till they didn’t, then my trusty LBS convinced me it would be easier and cheaper in the long run to fit Deore replacements. I’m very happy with them.

Do you think you'll ever fit them to anything? Admit it - it's not going to happen.

Having said that I have to admit that I still have mine somewhere in the garage. Probably next to the Sora (with thumb-levers) groupset and some steel-rimmed wheels. Just in case.

Bin them. Avid brakes are absolutely awful things.  The only thing that comes even close these days is the crap that SRAM churn out.

Put in the bin - they are now old design & poor brakes.

BTW both DOT 5.1 (and DOT4) and Mineral oil are both 'normal' brake fluids. The DOT fluids are used in brakes by Hope, SRAM, Hayes, Formula. Mineral oil is used by Shimano and Tektro.  However there are advantages to having those with makes with mineral fluid - the fluid lasts much longer and it is non-corrosive so any spillage is less damaging to paintwork etc. DOT 5.1 does have a slightly higher boiling point than mineral though

"Avoid avids" was the mantra drummed into me when I first started with all this mtb mallarky.

Bin them, don't sell them on and cause misery for other people further down the line, you know it makes sense.
