Forging Ahead: Celebrating 40 years of DMM Gear News

© DMM

Innovative, made in Wales, premium quality, and a little off the wall are all words that get mentioned when DMM comes up in conversation. For 40 years we've proudly manufactured lifesaving climbing and working at height equipment at our factory in north Wales and have exported it around the world (and even a bit further).

To celebrate this milestone, we've turned our hand to creating something a bit different starting with a video short. This will be followed with a feature length documentary 'Forging Ahead / Taro Ymlaen' and a series of written articles celebrating DMM's 'Landmark Products' which explore the evolution of some of our most iconic products.

Kicking off the celebrations on November 3rd is a video short of one of the original founders, Fred Hall and former director for 30 years, Paul Simkiss bouncing around ideas for the 40th celebration while climbing the classic route Cemetery Gates (E1 5b) in the Llanberis Pass (video below). The joy, quirks and creative innovation that has helped shape the company is evident and highlights the true meaning of the DMM motto 'Climb Now, Work Later'.

On November 18th DMM will be presenting its first feature documentary, Forging Ahead. The film was commissioned to tell the story of the people behind DMM's origins, its history and future aspirations. You'll get a unique insight into the culture and characters of the company, the personal connections formed through climbing and the story behind the manufacture of DMM's world class climbing, tree care and industrial products.

Framed by north Wales' most dramatic natural scenery, Forging Ahead follows Fred Hall, Paul Simkiss and Richard Cuthbertson as they recall and relive some of their most memorable moments whilst enjoying a pint at the legendary Pen Y Gwryd Hotel. What started with a few friends, a dog and a shed in north Wales has evolved into DMM as it is today – an innovative company that designs, manufactures and supplies high-quality equipment for climbing and working at height to the global market – albeit now produced in a much bigger shed.

With the DMM family now expanding far beyond the factory and forges on the shore of Llyn Padarn, these films and articles celebrate the stories of the people who are part of DMM, united by a passion for the outdoors and a desire to help keep people safe around the globe, both in work and at play.
