The Spider Climbing Group is a family owned and run business, operating various climbing centres and a high ropes course, primarily in the South East. We are looking for an Assistant Manager for Blue Spider, to work alongside the Centre Manager, and play a leading role in the development of the business. This is a brand-new position at Blue Spider.

Blue Spider Guildford is the premiere climbing centre in Surrey, offering bouldering, traversing, top-roping, lead climbing, auto-belays, and a training area. Climbers can purchase climbing equipment and accessories, or relax in the café where food is freshly prepared and cooked on site.

The Assistant Manager will be responsible for the smooth and effective day-to-day running of the centre, promoting and driving up standards, maximising on commercial opportunities, and deputising for the Centre Manager.

Open every day until late, this role will suit a dynamic, enthusiastic and pro-active individual with drive for continuous improvement; someone who is able to lead by example, and develop other staff. The position is permanent, full time (40 hours a week), with daytime, evening, and weekend shifts required.

The Assistant Manager will be well supported by the Centre Manager, and the experienced team of functional managers from the Spider Climbing Group Head Office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in identifying and delivering improvements to the centre's facilities, offering, and commercial opportunities
  • Purchase, inspection, and maintenance of equipment, including all record keeping
  • Manage the PPM programme
  • Work with the CM and the wider management team staff to improve efficiency, effectiveness, safety, and profitability
  • Reporting and feedback as required
  • Assist in recruitment
  • Manage customer service staff
  • Arrange cover for sickness, and conduct back to work meetings
  • Key holder. Open and Closing procedures
  • Floor walking / accident reporting / rescue procedures
  • Greet visitors, answer all enquiries and provide advice to customers
  • Take customer bookings
  • Deal with the hire and sale of equipment
  • Point of contact for fire / evacuation
  • Designated first aider
  • Provide help, support, and training for the customer service staff
  • Provide support for the coaching and route setting programmes
  • Overall responsibility for the presentation of the centre

  • Outstanding commitment to high quality customer service
  • Passion for climbing
  • Good time-management, and the ability to see the big picture and prioritise accordingly
  • Strong problem-solving skills

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Experience in the leisure sector
  • Rock Gym Pro user
  • First Aid
  • CWI or similar
  • Retail, food, and beverage experience
