This is an out-and-back route to visit the nine large beacons known as the Nine Standards. Their origin is uncertain, but whether a 'stone army' to deter the Scots (a long time ago) or less excitingly, boundary markers, these cairns are nevertheless remarkable, and a magnet for Coast to Coast walkers. This route is pretty much all ascent to the Rigg, and then a rewarding descent with fantastic views of the Eden Valley and the Pennines (on a clear day).

Detailed description
1
NY7750308739 Start the route in Kirkby Stephen's Market Square. You can park for free in the square if there is space, on Faraday Road (the road which runs parallel to the high street) or in the large car park, left before the Grammar School. To begin the walk leave the Market Square by the short lane past the WCs, descending Stoneshot and cutting down a snicket. Keep heading left and cross the River Eden at Frank's Bridge.
2
NY7766608759 After the bridge turn right with the river and follow the path to a kissing gate, after which take a surfaced wallside path away from the river. This will bring you out in the village of Hartley.
3
NY7828008632 When you reach a footpath T-junction in Hartley, take a right and follow the footpath down to a slab footbridge. After the footbridge you'll hit a road: turn right.
4
NY7831208511 Follow the tarmac road upwards, passing the entrance to Hartley quarry on a left bend, and a bit further on a cattle grid. Keep climbing on this road, it does flatten out eventually... I promise.
5
NY7973808223 Catch your breath on the descent and level approach to Fell House. Continue on the road over a second cattle grid, and then one final road climb brings you a fork in the road. Take the left one through a silver gate onto Hartley Fell.
6
NY7988207864 Follow the track onwards and upwards. If there has been recent rainfall you will have to cross a bit of standing water. Remain on the track until you reach a signpost.
7
NY8173205781 The signpost is for the Wainwright C2C route, offering those doing the challenge a seasonal variation. At this post head left.
8
NY8219705811 Being a popular route, there is an obvious worn track to follow. You'll catch glimpses of the Nine Standards on this undulating last leg up to the Rigg.
9
NY8245006532 The Nine Standards Rigg is (on a clear day) a wonderful place to be, with a good half of Northern England on display. Once you're done marvelling at the views, reverse your steps back down to Kirkby Stephen.
