βeta: Topped out to be greeted by a slightly over zealous National Trust employee who told me I couldn’t climb there. ‘Why not?’, I asked. ‘Oh, so many reasons, as you know!’ she replied. The best she could come up with were:- - we were climbing on a heritage monument (we weren’t) - we hadn’t asked permission (you don’t need to) - nesting birds (what?! - it’s mid-September...) - the usual one about it would be on their insurance if we had an accident. Rather than argue with her from halfway up the finishing slope, I brought up Clare whilst the lady waited patiently, presumably to ensure we complied with her request. Once we’d finished and got up to the belay, we had a perfectly reasonable conversation with her in which we deconstructed her arguments one by one. In the end she left us to go and ‘check with my boss’. But she insisted on taking my email address and promised to send me an apology if she was wrong! I’m not holding my breath.... | βeta? | |
