Just about the best trad climbing around on huge compact sandstone walls.

From Cape Town drive north along the N7 to Citrusdal. Take the turn off to Algeria. Continue over the Uitkyk Pass. After descending the other side turn left to Driehoek (the first turn off). The road turns into a single track and stay left to park at the end under some oak trees. (2.5 hours)
Cross over the river and walk along the dirt track towards Tafelberg and the Welbedacht kloof. The path crosses over the stream low down and winds up the dry kloof. Finally the stream is heard bubbling away. Fill up some water here as this is the last spot en route for water until you reach the top. Continue to the jeep-track / contour path and turn right following this for a short distance. A cairn on the left marks the single track turn off. Make your way through a marsh and up the vague gully to the higher vlakte. There is an alternative camp for tired walkers a few hundred meters off the path to your left at this point (close to some boulders). Water can often be found in the stream nearby. (2.5 - 3 hours)
The walk is considered to be one of the longer and more strenuous described. Water is difficult to find especially late in the season. Several parties have had to walk down due to the lack of water. Despite all these difficulties this is a prime venue with a unique atmosphere. Tafelberg falls into a large area as far as permits are concerned. As a result permits get booked out fairly quickly. It is advisable to book in advance.
