Sandstone, just like Northumberland, and nothing like grit.
Location of gate (Google maps link)
In the past we have all approached the crag by walking directly through the field from the gate and crossing the wall where it has partially collapsed, Following recent conversations with the farmer, who currently has no problems with climbers, this approach will need to change to avoid walking directly through the field. This is due to his legitimate concerns in respect of lambing and the deterioration of the wall which forms a boundry between farms. From now on after entering the field follow the wall downhill to the fence and follow this, crossing the wall at the small burn where there is space to pass under the fence. If taking dogs to the crag please ensure Rover is kept on the lead at all times. The farmer has always been relaxed about climbers so it is important that we all adhere to what is essentially the Countryside Code.
It would also be appreciated if there is a communal effort to reduce litter by taking away your own and as much as you can of anything that's been left behind by others.
Please do not climb on the crag for 48hrs after rain. The rock becomes friable and signs of erosion are becoming evident due to this.
