A fantastic sport crag which is now considered the Bernese Oberland's best known and famous 'hardman' areas. Grades start at 7a, going right up to Hubris at 8c+, although there are some worthwhile climbs in the 6s. The rock is unusual, possessing many of the features of sandstone but with the density and crimps of limestone. It is fairly steep and offers technical and powerful climbing. Best time to visit would be spring, late summer or autumn.
Park in the parking lot on Steindlerstrasse next to Camping Lazy Rancho, walk towards the treeline and in to the forest, cross the bridge over the river and there is a road directly ahead that goes up the hill. There is a barrier on this road that is sometimes closed and warns danger of shooting as there is a firing range nearby. You can still access the crag safely, however. Walk up this road and go past the first path that leads up the hill in to the forest, the second path that leads up can be taken to the right side of Lehn, Rosengarten sector, you may want to take this one if there are people shooting at the firing range. Otherwise continue up the road where it gets steep and there will be a more obvious path that leads up and takes you to the left side of Lehn, the Talwand sector.
Lehn is a brilliant sport crag with some very special routes. Well worth a visit on its own or combined with some longer alpine routes. The climbing starts at 6bish. The routes are technical font esque holds, very interesting absorbing climbing. Ian Broome - 16/Aug/11 |
